These are the films of the books that no one reads, but there are hundreds of people watching. - Tim Corballis, describing The Wellington Film Society as one of his favourite places - Sunday Magazine, Sunday Star-Times, 22 May 2005

he Wellington Film Society enables you to see in a cinema a range of international cinema you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Membership gives you free entry to all our screenings. Full year members also qualify for generous discounts at the annual New Zealand International Film Festival held each year in July/August, as well as discounts at Wellington cinemas and Aro Video. We are a non-profit incorporated society, affiliated to the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies, which has been screening films in Wellington for over 60 years. As well, there are film societies in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Nelson, Canterbury and Dunedin, and several smaller centres. Membership also gives you free entry at any of these other film societies in New Zealand. Film Society membership is open to everyone. However, we operate on a subscription basis because (with just a few exceptions) we have non-commercial screening rights, and must screen to members only. It is easy to Join, and membership runs for 12 months from month of joining. We also offer an upgradeable "Three Film Sampler" to make it easier for potential members to sample our films. Guests cannot be admitted, unless specifically stated in the Schedule, in which case visitors are admitted as members’ guests and a donation is payable at the door. The Wellington Film Society is run on behalf of its members by a voluntary committee elected at the Annual General Meeting held in March each year. All screenings are at the Paramount, 25 Courtenay Place, 6.15pm Mondays from the beginning of March to the end of November (except for public holidays and during the annual NZ International Film Festival). The Schedule is on the following page. As with any list, it is subject to change due to circumstances outside the Society's control. Our annual programme, as well as appearing on this web site, is published in a colour brochure which is distributed widely from mid-February around the Wellington area. You will find it on the counters of most movie theatres, libraries, book shops, cafes and other venues. We invite your comments. Become a Fan of the Wellington Film Society on  Facebook. Win prizes, get weekly reminders of screenings and comment on the films. We are sometimes asked Where Our Films Come From. Click on the link for a summary of the process. Thanks are due to the following: In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut we have the remarkable Dreileben Trilogy in June/July, and in September, The Joyless Street and Kinshasa Symphony. The Institut Francais for the Claire Denis films,  and three recent documentaries: Nostalgia For the Light, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, and Free Radicals: A History of Experimenmtal Film. Also to the Confucious Institute for The Piano in a Factory and Mr Tree, and to Reel Brazil for sharing with us one of their films. And to Cinema Paramount Limited for generously making their facilities available. As a fund-raising exercise we offer the Wellington edition of the Entertainment Book. This offers great discounts at many establishments in the Wellington region and pays for itself with only two or three nights out. With a face value of $60.00, the Film Society receives $12 each which goes towards acquiring films. Order on- line, with postal delivery - or pick up before our screenings. The 2013-2014 edition will be launched on 3 April.
