The Wellington Film Society Inc, PO Box 1584, Wellington 6140, New Zealand
he Wellington Film Society enables you to see in a cinema a range of international cinema you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Membership gives you free entry to all our screenings. Full year members also qualify for generous discounts at the annual Wellington Film Festival held each year in mid July, as well as discounts at Wellington cinemas and Aro Video.
We are a non-profit incorporated society, affiliated to the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies, which has been screening films in Wellington for over 60 years. As well, there are film societies in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Nelson, Canterbury and Dunedin, and several smaller centres. Membership also gives you free entry at any of these other film societies in New Zealand.
Film Society membership is open to everyone. However, we operate on a subscription basis because (with just a few exceptions) we have non-commercial screening rights, and must screen to members only. It is easy to Join, and membership runs for 12 months from month of joining. We also offer an upgradeable "Three Film Sampler" to make it easier for potential members to sample our films. Guests cannot be admitted, unless specifically stated in the Schedule, in which case visitors are admitted as members’ guests and a donation is payable at the door. The Wellington Film Society is run on behalf of its members by a voluntary committee elected at the Annual General Meeting held in March each year.
All screenings at the Paramount, 25 Courtenay Place, 6.15pm Mondays from the beginning of March to the end of November (except for public holidays and during the Wellington Film Festival). The Schedule is on the following page. As with any list, it is subject to change due to circumstances outside the Society's control. Our annual programme, as well as appearing on this web site, is published in a colour brochure which is distributed widely around the Wellington area. You will find it on the counters of most movie theatres, libraries, book shops, cafes and other venues.
We invite your comments. There is now a Facebook group page dedicated to the Wellington Film Society. Join up and participate in the conversations. Thanks are due to the following: Creative New Zealand for financial support in obtaining the Lech Majewski programme Landscape of Dreams, The French Embassy for the French Mavericks season and the Agnes Varda shorts, The Goethe Institut for the East German Behind the Wall season, The Korean Film Council for the two Korean films in October, The NZ Film Archive for the loan of the piano for our silent film, The NZ Film Commission; and Cinema Paramount Limited for generously making their facilities available.
We also acknowledge that Mr Majewski's visit is made possible by the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Canterbury, where he will be in residence as a Canterbury Fellow.
